The Perfect Creator God

Psalm 33v4-9

2nd August 2024

After the introductory section of this Psalm, which is an exhortation to sing joyfully to the Lord, the writer continues:

Psalm 33v4-5
For the word of the Lord is right and true;
he is faithful in all he does.
The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
the earth is full of his unfailing love.

The Bible is the word of the Lord The Bible is true. It's without falsehood or error. We can absolutely trust it. All English versions are imperfect translations of the Bible, so we have to be a bit careful, but the original scriptures, given by God, were perfect.

And Jesus Christ is the Word of God. As John 1v1 tells us, "In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God". Jesus is the ultimate expression of who God is. He's the way, the truth and the life (John 14v6). He’s perfect. He never spoke an untruth; you couldn't imagine Him doing so. He's utterly trustworthy. He's faithful in all He does.

God loves righteousness. It's unthinkable that God would ever cheat anyone, or give them less than they deserve. He cannot sin, by His very nature. May God grant that as we meditate on Him, and bring our praises to Him, we will come more and more to share His love of righteousness, and His abhorrence of unrighteousness.

God loves justice. There’s so much injustice in the world, because mankind is sinful. But one day justice will be done perfectly. Jesus will return, and He will judge the living and the dead, and every person will receive perfect justice. God loves justice, so Jesus came to pay the just penalty for our sins. We couldn’t be saved without justice. May we, too, come to love and pursue justice.

The world has some strange ideas about what justice is but justice, like everything else, is whatever God says it is. That is, true justice is Biblical justice. Don't let yourself be fooled into thinking justice is what the world says it is. One day, when Jesus returns to Earth, He will administer perfect justice, and many people who assume to teach us about justice will be condemned, not only for their actions but also for the falsehoods they teach.

God is perfect in honesty, faithfulness, righteousness, justice and love. And in every other way.

Furthermore, The earth is full of God’s unfailing love. Although mankind has done much to spoil God’s creation, much of the earth is still very beautiful. The sun still rises every morning, rain still nourishes the earth, crops still grow. There’s a lot of unkindness, selfishness and cruelty in this world, but there’s also a lot of generosity, thoughtfulness and kindness. All over the world, every minute, people are being born again as God’s children, people are being healed by God’s Spirit. Every Christian can speak of God’s forgiveness, God’s provision, and God's power in our lives.

The next section says:

Psalm 33v6-9
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
He gathers the waters of the sea into jars;
he puts the deep into storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord;
let all the people of the world revere him.
For he spoke, and it came to be;
he commanded, and it stood firm.

We’ve thought briefly about the Bible, the written word of God and about Jesus Christ, the Word of God who took on flesh. The Psalmist now turns to the creative word of God. As Genesis 1v3 says, "God said 'let there be light', and there was light." This is the only credible explanation for the big bang. God creates by speaking things into existence. What a mighty and wonderful God we serve!

God made the stars, and the oceans, and the animals, and us, God organised His creation, putting the water just where he wants it. God keeps the universe going. As Hebrews 1v3 tells us, Christ sustains "all things by His powerful word". As Colossians 1 says, "in him all things hold together."

It’s good to remind ourselves that God created the heavens and the earth. He owns all of creation, because he created it, and He keeps it going. He has the right to do whatever he wants with it. He is Lord. All people everywhere should fear their creator. All people should acknowledge His power and His goodness. Most don’t. But I pray for revival, and I hope you do.

Surely this gives us enough motivation to sing joyfully to the Lord (verse 1) but the Psalmist will give us more reasons in the coming verses. We'll continue with this study next time.
